Barclays update after customers forced to hand back groceries after huge outage

Barclays has vowed to leave no customer ‘out of pocket’ after a payday system crash left customers unable to pay for things like their shopping.

Some customers say they have been unable to access their money for 24 hours – with some forced to hand back shopping deliveries at the doorstep because they could not afford to pay for them.

Others said they could not afford to feed their children. Some people have been left in tears amid a backlash at the high street banking giant.

The chaos began on Friday morning. Reports came in that there were issues with mobile banking app and online banking services. Users could not make payments or verify if wages had been deposited.

The website DownDetector registered more than 3,000 complaints regarding Barclays’ digital services in just a few hours. Customers complained about mobile banking and struggles with internet banking access.

The outage came on the same day as January payday for many British workers. Today, angry customers have lashed out at Barclays support on social media.

One mother claimed she was unable to buy milk for her baby due to the outage.

“My four-month-old is out of milk powder and screaming for a feed and I still haven’t been paid,” she said.

She added: “I’ve been in tears for hours.”

Others painted a similar picture. “Due to you Barclays I’m left without money had a food shop due for delivery this morning which now will get cancelled, leave my four kids with no food it’s a joke as (it is) my money,” one X user claimed.

Another added: “How can I eat and keep warm if I can’t get to my funds?” Yet another claimed: “Well I’ve just had to put all my shopping back in Tesco never been so embarrassed in my life .. as can’t access my own money.”

In a statement on Saturday, a Barclays spokesperson said: “We’re incredibly sorry for the ongoing technical issues that are impacting our customers’ accounts.

“Some may see an outdated balance, and payments made or received may not show.

“We’re working hard to fix this issue, and customers should not try to make the payment again.

“Customers can use their cards and withdraw cash, and as soon as these remaining issues are resolved, we’ll let our customers know.
