Energy customers could be eligible for up to £2,000 in support through a grant scheme this winter. The British Gas Energy Support fund will reopen for applications from Monday, November 4.
This initiative is designed to provide a small uplift for British Gas or Scottish Gas customers who are struggling to afford their energy bills. Up to £2,000 can be awarded to help customers pay off their debts, while additional funding is being allocated to advice services across England, Scotland and Wales.
Since 2021, the scheme has assisted over 21,000 customers, according to British Gas. However, certain criteria must be met to qualify.
To apply for a grant, applicants must reside in England, Scotland, or Wales and not have received a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust within the past 12 months. As the primary aim of the grant is to assist with debt, applicants must also have an outstanding debt on a credit or prepayment meter account.
It’s also necessary to show that they have sought help from a money advice or guidance agency, such as Citizens Advice, within the previous six months. The British Gas Energy Trust will also assess whether applicants are at risk of, or already experiencing fuel poverty.
