An urgent warning has been issued by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to people making any form of claim for a benefit.
The government department is concerned that benefit claimants are being conned into filling out application forms, providing personal financial information, via scam emails and websites.
The UK’s biggest public service department administers and delivers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and health benefits to more than 20 million claimants and customers across Great Britain.
It has now posted on social media to remind new and existing claimants that it “does not publish any applications for download to your mobile devices or PCs” in an effort to stop people being tricked into divulging their personal and financial information to online scammers.
The move is designed to provide a helpful reminder to people making a new claim for Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Winter Fuel Payment, Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit and more.
These benefits can all be claimed online and any forms that can be downloaded, should only be done so from the dedicated page on GOV.UK.
The post on X, formerly Twitter, also said: “To be certain that you are using legitimate DWP services, only visit and use the relevant pages on the Government’s website in your browser.”

How to check if you have been sent a scam message
A new scam detection tool which enables users to upload a screenshot of any suspicious text, email or website to check if it is safe has been launched in the UK.

Once set up, a user will be told if the email, text or website is safe and be given suggested next steps, including the ability to report a scam.

It comes as rules come into force which make it mandatory for paying and receiving banks and payment providers to jointly refund consumers who lose money to scams, up to the value of £85,000.
