Expert reveals simple hack that can save mobile users £240 a year

An expert has revealed a simple hack for mobile users to save up to £240 per year.

Travelling, relying on technology while on the move or experiencing poor home internet connectivity can all lead to increased mobile data consumption.

When users exceed their monthly data allowances, they often resort to purchasing additional monthly data bundles, which can become expensive.

For customers with major UK network providers, exceeding the monthly data limit can result in charges of £2.50 per 100 MB of extra data used.

eSIM travel company Airalo has highlighted how users could save more than £20 per month on data expenses with this one hack – accounting to £240 a year.

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of the traditional physical SIM card used in mobile devices to connect to a network. It allows users to activate a mobile plan without the need to insert a physical SIM card into their phone, tablet, or other connected devices.

The eSIM is built directly into the device, usually in the form of a tiny chip soldered onto the device’s motherboard. Unlike a physical SIM card, you don’t need to remove or swap out SIM cards to change networks or plans.

eSIMs make it easier and often cheaper to switch between carriers without needing to buy a new SIM card each time you change networks. This is particularly useful when traveling internationally, as users can avoid paying high roaming charges by simply switching to a local carrier’s eSIM plan.

Traditional SIM card swaps often come with costs, either for the physical SIM card itself or for the inconvenience of going to a store to make the switch. With eSIM, this process is much faster and more flexible .

Major UK network providers charge up to £2.50 per 100MB of additional data, meaning customers exceeding their allowance by just 1GB could incur an extra £25 each month.

Experts at eSIM travel company, Airalo have advised: “Customers can save money on their monthly phone bill by using an eSIM, even when they’re not travelling.

“Downloading an eSIM for travelling, and turning off your primary SIM can significantly reduce fees. However, some customers may not realise they can benefit from using an eSIM in their local region.

“eSIMs offer a competitive price compared to leading UK network providers.

“So for customers who exceed their monthly data allowance, they can avoid staggering bills and extra charges by downloading an eSIM for cheaper and effective data usage.”

The advice comes as a major mobile company is all set to increase its charges. Sky Mobile is increasing both pay monthly and SIM-only contract prices on February 14, reported The Sun.

Customers who are no longer tied to a specific contract with their service provider will experience a fixed increase of £1.50 added to their monthly bill. Over the course of a year, this results in an additional charge of £18.
