Extra financial support available in 2025 for struggling households – how to apply

UK households struggling with the cost of living in 2025 could be eligible for grants and other forms of support. The winter months often exacerbate financial pressures, particularly as energy bills are due to rise again on January 1.

However, Brits may receive extra financial help through the Household Support Fund (HSF). This government fund was first launched in October 2021 and has been extended several times since, with the most recent extension making it available until March 2025.

The DWP has added an additional £421 million for distribution among local authorities in England. Extra funds have also been allocated to devolved social security administrations in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Local councils can use these funds to support residents in the way they see fit. Some councils may even assist with the purchase of essential household items like fridges, freezers, and ovens, provide an engineer for heating/lighting repairs, and help with housing costs (excluding mortgages) in emergency situations where existing schemes cannot provide assistance. Others are introducing voucher schemes to aid individuals and families.

Birmingham is ramping up its efforts to battle the cost of living crisis, offering hardship payments of £200, with the application process kicking off in November. In a similar push, Coventry City Council has revealed that for a two-month period, residents can apply three times during a six-month scheme for energy and water support under the Household Support Fund (HSF).

The government explains that the HSF is designed to help “anyone who’s vulnerable or cannot pay for essentials. You do not have to be getting benefits to get help from your local council”. Moreover, even those on benefits need not worry about their usual aid being affected by any additional support they might receive from the HSF.

However, as local councils are responsible for administering HSF funds, it falls upon them to determine who is eligible for assistance. Each local council has its own set of rules to define who qualifies for aid, meaning individuals must contact their respective councils to assess their eligibility. To discover more about the HSF available in your area, it only takes a quick visit to the government’s online directory, which will redirect you to your particular local council’s website for comprehensive information.
