A person using a Lloyds Bank cash machine was shocked when they accidentally withdraw five times the amount of cash that they meant to.
The individual contacted the bank over social media after the payout mistake. They explained: “I had a slight issue whilst using one of your cashpoints in Norwich today. I meant to withdraw £70 but blindly hit the 7 key instead of the screen prompts.
“At this point the machine issued me a full £500.” They asked if this was a mistake or an “inbuilt feature” and if it was supposed to happen.
Lloyds replied to say this was not a standard function for their ATMs. The group said: “The keypad shouldn’t be able to be used for making an automatic selection when withdrawing cash at an ATM.”
Fortunately, the bank suggested an easy solution to restore their account balance to what it should be: “You’ll be able to pay it back into your account at your nearest branch or Post Office.”
The person said they had done this “straightaway” so the issue had been resolved. They added that the ATM they had used was by the entrance to the Gentleman’s Walk branch in Norwich.
There is also a Lloyds cashpoint in Norwich outside the Aylsham Road branch, according to the cashpoint finder tool.
You can withdraw up to £800 a day from a Lloyds Bank cash point. You can also withdraw up to £300 a day from a current account at the Post Office, but this will count towards your withdrawal limit, so you will only be able to get out another £500 at an ATM.
Lloyds Bank is currently offering a £175 switching incentive to try and attract new customers. You can get the cash payment when switching to a Club Lloyds, Club Lloyds Silver, or Club Lloyds Platinum account.
You need to do the switch using the Current Account Switch Service, and you will need to switch over three or more active direct debits.
Other banks are also trying to entice new customers with cash incentives, with Nationwide Building Society also offering £175 to switchers.
You can get the funds when switching to a FlexPlus, FlexDirect or FlexAccount. Even if you already have one of these accounts, you can still get the payment if you switch over from a non-Nationwide account, as long as you follow the other rules. The offer ends on March 31.
Nationwide is also paying out some cash as a thank you to its loyal members, after it successfully took on Virgin Money.
The £50 payment is going out to 12 million customers. You must have been a member on September 30, 2024 to qualify.
Also in the 12 months to the end of September 2024, you must have had either:
- At least one qualifying transaction on your Nationwide current account or savings account, or
- At least £100 in total in one or more of your Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts, or
- Owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.
You will also qualify for the funds if you completed a switch to any Nationwide current account, between July 1, 2024 and September 30, 2024, using the Current Account Switch Service.
