Man ‘slashes bill of demon appliance’ by making one change to garden

In the current climate of rising living costs, people are scouring for any and every tip to cut down on expenses.

As budgets are squeezed tighter with escalating energy prices and even basic groceries seeming to creep up in cost, savvy money saving strategies are more sought after than ever.

On the quest to find practical ways to save cash, one TikTok user believes he has hit upon a genius solution that won’t break the bank – a change that involves just his garden. Social media influencer Leon, who goes by sociallyleon on TikTok, let his followers in on a brilliantly simple trick that significantly reduced his household bills.

His method is as straightforward as they come, especially useful now that better weather is on the horizon. Leon shared his trick, asserting that it’s a quick fix to “save money” on those pesky bills.

He elaborated on his approach, saying: “I’ve got a double washing line here – 15m each. Drying is costing us a fortune, but look how far these go.

“Still going, still going, still going. So there we go look – we’ve got two. One going that way and we’ve got one going that way.”

Anticipating criticism, Leon addressed concerns about the lines sagging, adding: “We’re tightening it now so it goes tight. Everyone crying saying ‘oh they fall down if you put a towel on them’. Yeah, because you’ve not tightened it under here.

“I can’t believe it hasn’t fell down. Family towel, bath mat – really heavy, towels, clothes – absolutely sound.”

The concept has piqued the interest of many, with one woman inquiring about how to affix the washing line securely to the fence. Leon clarified that the washing line comes with small hooks for easy attachment.

This simple solution could lead to significant savings, as numerous people might be inadvertently accruing higher energy bills due to common tumble dryer errors.

Money saving guru Martin Lewis previously told BBC News that there are far more economical methods to dry laundry than relying on a tumble dryer, even for those without a traditional washing line.

He advised: “Do you know what the real demon appliance is in most people’s houses? The one that you don’t want to use because it’s really expensive – tumble dryers.

“I mean, you’re typically paying up to a quid per load, so dry your clothes on an airer outside to shorten the amount of time you’re using your tumble dryer, or avoid using it completely. Those who have dehumidifiers – that can take some of the moisture out.

“It’s less wattage than the tumble dryer, so it can be more effective.”
