Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has said it is always worth asking your energy supplier one particular question.
Many UK households are struggling with their energy bills. They are being urged to get in touch with their providers for support.
Households on low incomes potentially qualify for discounts. Energy firms may offer bill reductions to customers facing financial hardships.
And Martin Lewis says that it’s “always worth asking” if you qualify for these discounts.
Martin shared how an Octopus Energy customer succeeded in lowering their charges after reaching out for help.
The Money Saving Expert host praised Octopus for their customer support. And he encouraged others to investigate what help might be at hand if they’re stressed about their energy costs.
He shared a social media post. The message read: “Martin, I contacted Octopus and said I was struggling on a low income.
“They asked me to complete a budget, which I did. And they have cancelled my standing charge for three months.
“Always worth asking if you’re struggling. Thumbs up to Octopus.”
With a reach of three million followers, Martin broadcasted the individual’s success story as part of his regular tips for saving cash. This advice is especially pertinent given that from October 1, energy bills have surged by an average of £179 annually.
Martin Lewis also urged householders to take one “easy” step to save money on bills. On ITV’s This Morning he said: “I would urge anybody out there at the moment who is sitting on the price cap to get yourself onto a whole of market comparison site, one that by default, shows you all the tariffs.
“Find what your cheapest fixes are. And look at how that compares to what you’re paying right now.”
