Money savvy expert Martin Lewis has issued an “urgent” tip for travellers using one of Britain’s rail networks which could see them owed more than £30.
Posting on his X account the TV presenter and professional penny pincher gave some advice for people using South West Trains and a bonus they need to collect by midnight on Friday January 10.
He wrote: “URGENT: Did you travel with South West Trains 2015 to 2017?
“Quickly check if you’re due an easy £30+. It’s paying up to £25m in compensation for alleged historic overcharging, but you’ve only got till 11.59pm on Friday to do it… Feel free to share.”
The article on the page reveals: “If you took a South West train out of London between 1 October 2015 and 20 August 2017, and held a Transport for London (TfL) Travelcard at the time, you may have been overcharged and you can claim compensation.”
The compensation follows a campaign by a group who argued they had been effectively charged twice for travelling on some parts of the network. According to MoneySavingExpert, South West Trains agreed to pay up to £25 million in an out-of-court settlement.
Those eligible for compensation could now be due a refund starting at around £30 and rising to above £100 with enough evidence of purchase.
The website said people who might be able if;
- You had a TfL Travelcard at any time between 1 October 2015 and 20 August 2017;
- While you had the Travelcard, you bought one or more South West Trains tickets for travel from a station within the zones covered by your TfL Travelcard (such as London Waterloo) to a station outside those zones (see examples);
- You lived in the UK on both 19 October 2021 and 30 April 2024 (these dates relate to judgments in the case); and
- You haven’t previously opted out of the legal case (if this is the first you’re hearing of the case, you don’t need to worry about this point – everyone living in the UK was opted in automatically and you would’ve had to fill in a form or contact the law firm to opt out).
