Nationwide Building Society has issued a message to its customers about the future of its branches. The mutual currently has 605 Nationwide branches, as well as 91 Virgin Money branches, following its acquisition of Virgin Money in 2024.
The group recently stated that there are 133 local areas where Nationwide is the only savings provider with a branch remaining. As many banks and building societies reduce their in-person presence, customers may wonder if Nationwide will soon follow suit.
But the building society has assured its members that there is no danger of branch closures for the next few years. In a three-word message seen in several branch windows, the group assures: “We’re staying put.”
Nationwide announced recently that it will continue to keep open every one of its 696 Nationwide and Virgin Money branches. All these outlets will remain open until at least the start of 2030.
In a message on the group’s website, Nationwide said: “Keeping our branches open is one of the reasons we were awarded Which? Banking Brand of the Year 2025. There may be circumstances beyond our control that mean we have to close a branch.
“Or relocate it in the same town. We’ll only do so when there’s no other workable option.” Debbie Crosbie, CEO of Nationwide Building Society, said: “Our customers can be confident that they can bank with us whichever way they choose.
“Branches are important to our customers, to communities, and to the health of our high streets. That’s why Nationwide will continue to keep branches open in addition to our investment in online and telephone channels.”
Some notable branch features include a dementia clinics at 200 Nationwide branches, where customers can get confidential appointments with a specialist dementia durse from Admiral Nurses. They can provide expert advice and emotional support to anyone who is impacted by dementia.
Customers can also access safe spaces at 400 branches, providing a place of refuge from domestic abuse. These are private areas where you can rest, explore your options, and access any help you need safely and confidentially.
