A major energy company has told UK households how they can get £240 off their energy bill – all by following three tips. Octopus Energy has a string of winter tips to help UK households save cash ahead of Christmas.
Minding the gaps by draught-proofing homes could save £85, controlling thermostats £90 and setting the flow temperature to 55C could save £65. All told, it would save customers a cool £240. It comes after Octopus installed its one-millionth smart meter of the year – a company first and a major milestone in the shift to a smarter, cheaper, cleaner energy system. The milestone installation took place at the home of Martin Browne, 50, from Manchester, who was greeted with an Octopus-style celebration: a unicorn, a brass band, balloons, confetti cannons, and a surprise visit from local legend Jason Manford, who helped welcome the newest smart meter to the family.
Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, chief product officer at Octopus Energy: “Smart meters aren’t just little boxes on the wall – they’re the key to cheaper bills, cleaner energy and a grid that works for everyone.
“Hitting a million installs this year shows just how much customers want to take control of their energy, and we’re over the moon to help them do it.
“If that milestone also means surprising someone in Manchester with a unicorn and Jason Manford, what more can we say!”
Octopus, which is rivalled by British Gas, EDF, EON, Ovo and more, says it operates a £7 billion renewables portfolio as well as thriving EV leasing, heat pump, and solar businesses.
In its winter tips, Octopus said: ” We’ve pulled together some of the quickest, simplest, and most effective ways you can save energy around the house.
“We’ve all heard ‘don’t leave the telly on standby’ and ‘only fill the kettle with the water you need’. It’s easy to tune them out, thinking they won’t make much difference. But small actions really do add up, and combined together you can stand to really save!”
