State pensioners will wake up to ‘bonus’ £150 payment in account

State pensioners will receive a £150 credit in their energy account this winter, thanks to the return of the Warm Home Discount under the new Labour Party government.

The Warm Home Discount Scheme provides a one-time £150 discount on your electricity bill.

If eligible, your electricity supplier will automatically apply the discount to your bill rather than giving you the money directly.

You might also be able to get a discount on your gas bill if your supplier provides both gas and electricity and you qualify.

To check, contact your supplier. In England and Wales, you qualify if you either receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit or have a low income with high energy costs.

As of August 13, 2023, you qualify for the discount if all the following apply: your energy supplier is part of the scheme, your name (or your partner’s) is on the electricity bill, and you or your partner receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you also get Savings Credit).

This group is referred to as ‘core group 1’ in England and Wales, or simply the ‘core group’ in Scotland.

Even if you don’t receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, you may still qualify if you have a low income in England and Wales.

For those eligible, the electricity supplier will apply the discount directly to your bill.

If you don’t receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, you may still qualify if your energy supplier is part of the scheme, you (or your partner) receive certain means-tested benefits or tax credits, and your property has a high energy cost score based on its characteristics.

In this case, your name (or your partner’s) must be on the electricity bill, and you would be classified as being in ‘core group 2’.
