FOMC Polymarket odds increasingly favor the Federal Reserve leaving interest rates unchanged at its October meeting, with the probability of another rate hike falling sharply despite persistent inflation concerns.

According to the latest Polymarket figures, the odds of the Fed holding rates steady stand at 87%, while the probability of a 25-basis-point increase has dropped to 14%. The market assigns less than a 1% chance to a rate cut or a larger increase.

The figures suggest traders expect Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) to take a wait-and-see approach at their October 27–28 meeting. The contract has attracted tens of millions of dollars in trading volume, reflecting significant interest in the central bank’s next move.

However, expectations have shifted considerably in recent weeks. After hotter-than-expected inflation data, the probability of an October hike climbed toward 50% before retreating as investors reassessed the likelihood of consecutive hikes.

The latest US consumer price index (CPI) report showed annual inflation accelerating to 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August. Core inflation also increased, reinforcing concerns that price pressures could remain above the Fed’s 2% target.

Nevertheless, some policymakers have argued against rushing into another increase. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said on October 14 that further hikes could be necessary to control persistent inflation but stressed there was no urgency to act at the upcoming meeting.

That distinction appears central to current market pricing: traders are not ruling out additional tightening, but increasingly expect policymakers to wait for more evidence before moving again.

Social Media and Market Commentary Reflect Uncertainty

Discussion among prediction-market traders has highlighted the competing arguments. In a recent Reddit discussion in the r/Polymarket community, participants pointed to the September inflation figures and elevated energy costs as reasons a hike could remain possible, while also noting that earlier comments from Fed officials had reduced expectations of immediate action.

Warsh has added another layer of uncertainty by declining to signal the committee’s next move publicly. Speaking at an International Monetary Fund event in Bangkok on October 16, he said he does not prejudge individual meetings.

The lack of explicit forward guidance leaves traders particularly sensitive to incoming economic data and any remaining policy signals.

What Comes Next for Fed Rate Expectations?

With the October meeting approaching, Polymarket’s current pricing makes a pause the clear favorite, though odds can shift quickly as new information emerges.

A fresh inflation surprise could revive bets on a hike, while softer economic data or further calls for patience from policymakers could reinforce expectations of unchanged rates.

For now, traders appear to favor caution over immediate tightening. The key question is whether the Fed sees inflation as sufficiently persistent to justify another hike, or whether policymakers will wait until December before deciding their next move.
